2025 Summer Goals Assessment

2025 Summer Goals Assessment

The Numbers:

In January, I published a set of 107 goals, plus have about 20 or so secret goals. It's midyear now and I've done a goal reassessment. I'm going to be adding and taking away from those goals, and talking about why some are being abandoned and added.

Of the 107 public goals, I've completed 24 goals and have partially completed or started 61 and outright failed 1. I have 21 goals that I have not started. Of those unstarted goals, I've decided to abandon 13 of them, mostly focused on playing RPG's and then a few smaller goals around career development and one big one about pushing for Athena income. It's plausible I could still do those, but it's not a priority.

In their place, I've added 16 new goals, ranging from goals about performance art, marketing learning, and making friends. It feels funny to set a goal about making friends or learning a dance lift, but they are things I want and I want to be reminded regularly about them.

This brings my total up to 111 public goals.

Analysis:

Why were the abandoned goals abandoned?:

7 of them are playing ttrpgs. As much as I love it, it requires significant time commitment, and coordinating adults. I'm doing that in other ways, so it's pulling from the same well. 3 of them are related to Athena, and while there's still an outside chance of this being successful, I'm not putting energy into it. One of these days I'm gonna learn to golf, but this year is not the year.

What's the likelihood you'll complete all of these goals?:

Less than 10%.

What's the likelihood you'll complete 80% of these goals?:

70% seems right. I'm going on the majority of these goals, and the ones that I haven't started I can see a pathway to begin.

What's the toughest goal on the list?:

Probably a tie between making $50k on side businesses and writing 5 Ableton songs.

Easiest goal to complete?:

A kayak and swimming day with Suzy is likely very easy to complete.

Why?

I'm regularly asked this: Why so many goals? Why track them publicly?

The simplest answer is because I enjoy it and I have a more satisfying life knowing that I will have grown and improved.

The slightly longer answer is because I've tamed a little genie. The genie is not all powerful, but it can create wishes. If you write them down, and look at them regularly, if you pay attention on a daily basis to what you care about, if you build discipline to look at your own desires and *fucking do the damn thing* then the genie will grant your wishes. Little ones, big ones, spicy ones and plain ones. All you have to do is write them down and actually try to get them granted.
